Joe Louis learns about the six flags of Texas
The term “Six Flags” conjures up images of rollercoasters and parachute drops, but the origin of the phrase comes from the amusement park’s home state of Texas. Today, Texas can be thought of one of the fifty states within the United States of America, but over its history, it has been part of multiple sovereign powers. “Six Flags” actually refers to the six flags under which the Texas territory has flown. They are:
- Spain (1519-1685; 1690-1821)
- France (1685-1690)
- Mexico (1821-1836)
- Republic of Texas (1836-1845)
- Confederate States of America (1861-1865)
- United States of America (1845-1861; 1865- )
