Joe Louis dreams of sushi
There is only a single three Michelin star sushi restaurant on the planet: Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo. For a world class establishment, it is the most unassuming restaurant I have ever visited. It is not on a well populated avenue or even in a swanky building. No Jiro’s shop is on the lower level of a subway station. I would recommend leaving some buffer time for finding the actual location as you may have to wrestle throngs of commuters in Ginza station before actually coming across your destination.
Chef Jiro Ono rose to wider international fame after the release of the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Jiro is a perfectionist in his trade and uses only the highest quality ingredients, including rice provided exclusively to his restaurant. To secure a spot for the limited space tasting menu, you must reserve at least three months in advance. Dinner can you run you up to $400. If you are a sushi lover it is worth it.
For the more budget inclined, there are other great options in Japan, albeit perhaps not the best in the world. For the freshest sushi you have ever eaten, look no further than the Tsukiji fish market, where sushi vendors buy their tuna directly through auction.
